Do the ingredients in Pharmacist Formulas Acne Block really work to help acne?
There are many acne pills on the market with Acne Block pills being one of the newest. The brand says that their product can help cystic and hormonal acne. Some Pharmacist Formulas Acne Block reviews rave about the product while others are unimpressed. Compared to other pills reviewed on this site, does this product stand up to the effectiveness of some of the others?
Below we will go in depth about the Acneblock pills and how effective it actually is.
Acne Block Reviews
Before we bought Pharmacist Formulas Acne Block from Amazon we of course read other customers’ experiences of the supplement. Acneblock pills has a decent amount of reviews for a new company, but we believe there is some sort of manufacturing of the reviews for a couple of reasons.
In some of the reviews we noticed that people were posting images of the top of the bottle. We have not seen customers taking photos of the tops of other products and posting them in reviews.
There is also a customer review which questions the trust of the before and after images. (See here)
Can Acne Block Cause Side Effects?
There are ingredients in AcneBlock that may cause unwanted side effects in some people. Lactoferrin, DIM and zinc are a few of the ingredients to be mindful of when taking this product.
Lactoferrin from cow’s milk has side effects like diarrhea, skin rash, loss of appetite, and fatigue. It may also have trace amounts of lactose because it is derived from dairy.
DIM has powerful hormonal effects in the body, but side effects that may arise are a missed menstrual cycle, hair loss, joint pain, and erectile dysfunction in men.
DIM is also an aromatase inhibitor which blocks the enzyme aromatase from turning androgens into estrogens. This means that there will be higher amount of androgens in the body which may lead to more acne.
Zinc has been shown to raise testosterone in some people. (1) Testosterone is the androgen that causes breakouts to occur. It is very common for men with low testosterone to take zinc as it helps increase it, but testosterone may also produce more oil from the skin which may clog pores.
Some people have success with taking zinc for acne, but not every one reacts the same way.
Side effects are rare, but may occur in some people. It is always best to speak with your physician before starting any supplement regimen and to ensure there are no interactions with medication you are currently taking.
Acne Block Ingredients
- Vitamin B5 (as Calcium d-Pantothenate) 500 mg
- Vitamin D3 (as Cholecalciferol) 1000 IU
- Magnesium (as TRAACS Bisglycinate Chelate) 50 mg
- Selenium (as Albion glycinate complex) 200 mcg
- Zinc (as TRAACS Bisglycinate Chelate)10 mg
- Bioferrin (Lactoferrin Milk peptide from Sweet Whey) 200 mg
- CurcuWin (Curcuma longa) (root) 200 mg
- 3,3 Diindolylmethane (DIM) 150 mg
Some of these ingredients are questionable in regards to milligram amount and effectiveness.
CURCUMIN AND MAGNESIUM- DO THEY REALLY DO ANYTHING FOR ACNE?
Curcumin (turmeric) is a natural ingredient that has anti-inflammatory properties. It may be helpful for overall skin health. There are no real clinical studies or evidence showing that there is a correlation between Curcumin and the reduction of acne.
Magnesium is an important mineral for overall health. It can benefit our heart, increase energy, and help our mood.
There are no studies showing that magnesium can reduce acne, but it does play a role in the synthesis of glutathione. (2) which is an antioxidant that has powerful anti-inflammatory effects on the body. A study concluded that people with lower levels of glutathione had more acne. (3)
Because Curcumin and Magnesium are in the product and there are no studies or real evidence that they work for acne that takes away 500mg from the two capsule dose that they could have used for active ingredients that will help alleviate acne symptoms and oily skin.
WHAT IS DIM?
Diindolylmethane or "DIM" is naturally consumed from cruciferous vegetables including cauliflower, brussels sprouts, and kale. They all contain indole-3-carbinol which is metabolized in the body into DIM. (4)
Some acne pills contain DIM because it has been shown to balance hormones in both men and women. In women, it can be anti-estrogenic if estrogen is already at high levels. (5)
High levels of estrogen may be caused by PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) which has side effects such as increased acne.
The problem with adding DIM into an acne supplement is that is it going to lessen the number of people that can take the product. If you are on birth control, pregnant, or taking certain medications you must talk to a doctor first as it could cause interactions.
DIM has a hormonal effect on the body and may cause a missed period in women, joint pain, and hair loss.
Although it is a great ingredient for some people it is not good for everyone and people should be aware that it has an hormonal impact and could cause negative side effects.
What is Lactoferrin?
Lactoferrin is a protein enzyme found in breast milk. It is also present in saliva and tears. Lactoferrin is different from the sugar enzyme found in milk called lactose so a person with lactose-intolerance shouldn’t have an issue consuming it. (6)
This enzyme is made from whey which is a source of dairy. Although Lactoferrin does not contain lactose, any form of dairy may cause side effects such as inflammation in the face and body.
The reason why Lactoferrin is added into this product and some other acne pills as well is because it may fight bacteria that causes acne. (7)
A study showed that 200mg of Lactoferrin helped to decrease inflammatory blemishes. (8)
Acne showed improvement in the lactoferrin group by significant decreases in inflammatory lesion count by 38.6%, total lesion count by 23.1%, and acne grade by 20.3% compared with the placebo group at 12 wk.
Compared to another acne pill called Praventac (containing 500mg of Lactoferrin) the amount added may not be enough to get the full acne fighting effect.
Can Supplementing Vitamin D3 Be Helpful for Breakouts?
Vitamin D3 is a form of vitamin D and is fat soluble. It is needed to help fight infections and inflammation.
Supplementing D3 may not be as effective as obtaining it from sunlight. When you go out in the sun your skin absorbs vitamin D which is then converted into vitamin D3 in the body. The skin also synthesizes vitamin D3 sulfate which you can not get through supplement form.
Vitamin D3 sulfate is water soluble and provides different benefits that unsulfated vitamin D3 because it can travel through the bloodstream without harm. (9) Getting your vitamin D through sunshine has another benefit in that you can not overdose on it.

CONCLUSION: Is Acne Block Worth Your Money?
Acne Block from Pharmacist Formulas may not be the supplement to take if you are looking for a solution for treating acne. Some of the ingredients are not proven to help severe breakouts so we can not be sure if it actually works.
The name "Pharmacist Formulas" is sketchy and misleading because it implies that it is backed by a pharmacy or created by a pharmacists which it is not according to any information on the internet. This is a common tactic by unscrupulous sellers who prey on defenseless customers to push their random concoctions.
Because Acneblock is a new product and it already has accusations of trust issues we can not recommend this brand. We do not think it is the best acne treatment to add to your beauty and skin care routine.
